Upstairs in a quaint Brentwood Village shopping center by other small workout studios, is Maha Yoga, yoga guru Steve Ross’s home base. He teaches classes at the studio daily, along with other expert i
nstructors.

You enter through the small lobby, which has plenty of yoga clothes, mats and books to browse while you wait, where you can scope out your fellow classmates—plenty of regulars who know each other and the instructors well but are very welcoming to new students. You can also rent a mat for $2 if you don’t have one, and a limited number of yoga blocks and other accessories are available for free.

Once in the bamboo-floored, bright, white-curtained studio space, the 90-minute class with get going pretty quickly. The studio offers a wide variety of classes at varying levels—a great one to start with is All Levels Flow, taught by Stephanie Phelan.

She’ll take you through an hour-long set of flowing poses, reminding you to stay positive throughout the process and helping you fold into the positions or reinvigorate by coming around and massaging you on the neck and back. And you’re always encouraged to work where you feel comfortable—whether that means resting often or taking positions a step further.

Though the All Levels Flow class is one of Maha Yoga’s easier classes, your muscles will still be working pretty hard. And if it’s warm and sunny outside, you’ll work up a good sweat, since the studio doesn’t have air conditioning. Just think of it as Bikram light and appreciate how the heat helps you stretch a little further.

The last half hour of class winds down to floor exercises and then to savasana—relaxation—what makes this class absolutely worth it. With chimes playing softly in the background and the instructor coming around massaging sage lotion into your feet, it’s enough to make you want to fall asleep right there.

When you finally do get up, you’ll feel supremely relaxed and reinvigorated. The sweet smell of sage will linger on you until you get home. And the instructor may even have a special treat, like fresh strawberries and chocolates, as a reward to “nourish your body and your soul.”
